General Staff operational report January 21, 2023 on the Russian invasion of Ukraine

The 332nd day of the Russia-Ukraine War: official operational information by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 21.01.2023.

The threat of ground-based and air-launched missile strikes and “kamikaze drones” attacks remains high across Ukraine.

During the day Russian forces conducted 26x air airstrikes and 15x MLRS attacks.

The Russian army does not give up its invasion plans and concentrates main efforts on further attempts to occupy Donetsk oblast. Russian soldiers  attempted unsuccessful offensives on Avdiivka axis, and continued offensives on Baknmut and Zaporizhzhia directions supported by increased number of air raids.

However, Russian troops stay on the defensive on other axes.

  • Volyn, Polissya, Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: no offensive groupings were detected. Russian territorial defense troops keep coming to the Republic of Belarus. In order to keep armed forces in full combat readiness, the Belarusian leadership has yet again prolonged the dates of combat readiness check of Belarusian armed forces. This time it has been prolonged until January 30.The threat of provocative border armed incidents remains.
  • The Republic of Belarus continues to provide comprehensive support to Russian aggression. In addition to joint exercises, training of Russian units continues on the territory of Belarus.
  • The Russian army does not stop artillery shelling along the entire line of contact. The vicinities of Bachivsk and Volfyne (Sumy oblast); Veterynarne, Kozacha Lopan, Strilecha, Krasne, Starytsya, Ohirtseve, Vovchansk, Budarky, Kolodyazne, and Novomlynsk (Kharkiv oblast) came under Russian mortar and artillery fire.
  • Kupyansk axis: the vicinities of Synkivka, Kucherivka, Pishchane, Krokhmalne, Novoselivske, Stelmakhivka, Vyshneve, and Pershotravneve (Kharkiv oblast); Novoselivske and Stelmakhivka (Luhansk oblast) suffered tank, mortar, barrel and rocket artillery fire.
  • Lyman axis: Russian military shelled Novoyehorivka, Makiivka, Ploshanka, Nevske, Chervonpopivka, Dibrova, and Serebryansk forestry (Luhansk oblast).
  • Bakhmut axis: the Russian arny shelled Ukrainian positions in the vicinities of more than 25x settlements, including, Verhknokamyanske, Vyimka, Bilohorivka, Blahodatne, Bakhmut, Klishchiivka, Bila Hora, Diliivka, Druzhba, and Zalizne (Donetsk oblast).
  • Avdiivka axis: Avdiivka, Vodyane, Pervomaiske, Nevelske, Heorhiivka, Marinka, and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast) were subject to Russian attacks.
  • Novopavlivka axis: Vuhledar, Prechistivka, Zolota Nyva, and Velyka Novosilka (Donetsk oblast) came under fire.
  • Zaporizhzhia axis: more than 25x settlements were affected by artillery fire, including, Vremivka and Novopil’ (Donetsk oblast); Olhivske, Hulyaipole, Charivne, Novodanylivka, Kamyanske, and Plavia (Zaporizhzhia oblast).
  • Kherson axis: Russian soldiers has yet again shelled Vesele (Zaporizhzhia oblast); and Kozatsk, Novoberyslav, Tyaginka, Tokarivka, Sadove, Naddniprianske and the city of Kherson from the entire range of artillery.

The Russian army strengthens control over civilian population in the temporarily captured territories of Kherson oblast. In particular, Russian troops take measures to create a database with information about actual addresses (places of living) of the local population, threatening to cut off electricity. Under the guise of implementing an “electricity saving program”, the so-called “authority” is taking coercive measures to sign the “act of confirmation of the actual place of residence of a citizen”.

During the past day, Ukrainian Air Force conducted 13x air strikes on Russian concentration areas and 2x air strikes against Russian air defense systems. Ukrainian missile and artillery units attacked 1x concentration of Russian troops.
