The 546th day of the Russia-Ukraine War: official operational information by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 23.08.2023.

Russia’s attacks on the civilian infrastructure in Ukraine

During the day, the Russian army conducted 9 missile and 49 aviation strikes, carried out 40 rocket artillery shelling rounds at the positions of Ukrainian troops and residential areas.

Additionally, today Russian troops launched another attack on the territory of Ukraine using the UAV Shahed-136/131. Ukrainian anti-air defense system destroyed 12 Russian combat drones.

Unfortunately, due to the Russian terrorist attacks, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population. Residential buildings, port infrastructure, schools, and other civilian facilities have been damaged. The likelihood of missile and aviation strikes across the entire territory of Ukraine remains high. There were 16 combat clashes during the day.

  • The operational situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions remains relatively unchanged.
  • In the Siversk and Slobozhansk directions, the Russian army conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Romny, Kostyantynivka in the Sumy region, and Dovzhнk, Chuhunivka in the Kharkiv region. It also carried out mortar and artillery shelling on more than 15 populated areas, including Bleshnia in the Chernihiv region; Iskryshkivshchyna, Pokrovka, Ryasne in the Sumy region, and Ohirtseve, Hatyshche, Krasnyi Yar in the Kharkiv region.
  • In the Kupiansk direction, the Russian army conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the area of Novoyehorivka, Luhansk region. It carried out aviation strikes in the areas of Shyykivka, Kharkiv region, and Tverdokhlibove, Luhansk region. Russian artillery and mortar shelling affected populated areas such as Hrianykivka, Masyutivka, Synkivka, Kupiansk, Pershotravneve, and Orlanske in the Kharkiv region.
  • In the Lyman direction, more than 30 populated areas, including Nevske, Bilohorivka, Luhansk region, and Yampil, Zakitne, Verkhniokamyanske, Ivan-Dariivka, Spirne, Donetsk region, experienced Russian artillery shelling.
  • In the Bakhmut direction, Russian troops conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the area of Vesele, Donetsk region. They carried out aviation strikes in the areas of Spirne, Klishchiivka, Andriyivka, Bila Hora, Donetsk region. Over 25 populated areas suffered from Russian artillery shelling, including Nykyforivka, Vasylivka, Zaliznyanske, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka in the Donetsk region.
  • In the Avdiivka direction, populated areas like Avdiivka, Tonenke, Siverne, Vodyane, Pervomaiske, Nevelske in the Donetsk region, experienced artillery shelling.
  • In the Marinka direction, Ukrainian soldiers continue to resist the Russian troops’ advance in the Marinka area, Donetsk region. Populated areas like Krasnohirka, Marinka, Pobeda, Novomykhailivka, Kostyantynivka, Katerynivka in the Donetsk region, were subjected to artillery shelling.
  • In the Shakhtarsk direction, over 10 populated areas suffered from Russian artillery shelling, including Novoukrainka, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, Shakhtarske, Blahodatne, Urozhayne in the Donetsk region.
  • In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the Russian army conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the area of Mala Tokmakchka, Zaporizhzhia region. It carried out aviation strikes in the areas of Orikhiv and Robotyne, Zaporizhzhia region. Over 20 populated areas, including Magdalynivka, Lukyanivske, Pavlivka, Pyatykhatky, Plavni in the Zaporizhzhia region, suffered from Russian artillery shelling.
  • In the Kherson direction, Russian soldiers conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Beryslav, Odradokamyanka, Lvove, Kherson in the Kherson region, and Izmail, Odesa region. Kherson, Yantarnoye, Veletenske, Kizomys, Sofiyivka, Shyroka Balka, Kherson region, were affected by Russian artillery shelling.

Ukrainian countermeasures

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue their offensive operation in the Melitopol direction, consolidating their positions at the achieved lines, and conducting counter-battery measures.

During the day, the Defense Forces’ aviation carried out 1 strike on a command post, 10 strikes on personnel concentration areas, and 1 strike on Russian anti-aircraft missile system.

Rocket and artillery units throughout the day targeted 2 command posts, 1 personnel concentration area, armaments, military equipment, and 2 artillery systems on Russian firing positions.
