UN disbanded the mission to investigate the killing of Ukrainian war prisoners in Olenivka

Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted on January 5, 2023, that the United Nations decided to dissolve the special mission created in August 2022, which was called to gather facts about the terrorist attack in the Russian-occupied Olenivka (Donetsk region), as a result of which dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed.

”The Secretary-General has decided to disband his fact-finding mission regarding the 29 July 2022 incident at Olenivka Ukraine, in the absence of conditions required for the deployment of the mission to the site,” noted the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

At the same time, the UN Secretary-General called for full compliance with international humanitarian law and norms in the field of human rights, including the protection of civilians and the treatment of prisoners of war.

Russia did not give the mission the opportunity to start its work.

Uaposition memo: On the night of July 29, 2022, a powerful explosion occurred in the building in which Ukrainian prisoners of war were kept, on the territory of the former correctional colony in Olenivka (Russian-occupied Donetsk region, east of Ukraine). According to the Russian side, about 50 Ukrainian war prisoners were killed, and more than 70 were seriously injured.
