Jourova called for granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership.

“My heart says: let’s give them the opportunity to get candidate status as soon as possible. This is a very strong symbolic message and encouragement for the Ukrainian people. My mind says that we must understand the situation in the country not only given the Copenhagen criteria but also considering issues related to institutions “, – said the European Commissioner.

“We must also look at Ukraine somewhat differently from states in which peace reigns. In addition, Ukraine is completely devastated. Therefore, we must work in parallel on a possible candidate status and the country’s restoration as soon as possible.”

Commenting on the proposal of French President Emmanuel Macron to grant Ukraine “intermediate status” before joining the EU, the Vice President of the European Commission said that these are “similar concepts.”
