Russians created a situation at Ukraine’s nuclear plant close to the Fukushima nuclear disaster

The Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko noted on December 14, 2022, that the capture of the nuclear power plant by Russia destroyed any signs of a security system in Ukraine provided for by agreements developed by Western countries and the IAEA.

“This is not only a problem of Ukrainian nuclear security. This means that missiles with a range of, say, 2,000 kilometers can reach any nuclear reactor,” explained the Minister of Energy of Ukraine.

Herman Halushchenko said that after the seizure of the Zaporizhzhia NPP in the south of Ukraine, Russian forces continued to fire on the power lines which connect it to the Ukrainian power system.

According to the Ukrainian Energy Minister, Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant went into a power outage mode five times.

In the event of a shutdown, a “classic Fukushima scenario” could occur, referring to the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011.

“They [Russian troops – ed.] fire at Ukrainian power lines, destroy them, after which the plant works on diesel generators, which means that we are one step away from an accident,” the Minister added.

But even after the restoration of power supply lines and electricity supply to the station, the alarming process begins again with the start of new Russian shelling.

“This is a crazy game with nuclear security,” emphasized Herman Halushchenko.
