As noted, a quarter of Ukrainian wheat is grown on lands claimed by Russia. The Russians stole almost 6 million tons of grain, about 88% of winter crops, from territories not controlled by Ukraine.

“However, Russia will likely reap the benefit of a significant portion of the close to 27-million-ton wheat crop. The analysis showed that 5.8 million tons of wheat was harvested from areas that were not under Ukrainian control. That represents a loss of at least $1 billion,” noted Abdolreza Abbassian, a NASA Harvest partner.

NASA Harvest estimates are for wheat and exclude other crops or foods that have been in storage for now. Russian ships exported the grain, likely to various countries, including Libya and Iran, but it is difficult to estimate the volumes because shippers hide the origin of the cargo.
