Prosecutor’s office recorded more than 5,000 cases of torture of Ukrainians by Russian troops

The Office of the Prosecutor’s General of Ukraine noted on December 23, 2022, that it opened 5,079 criminal proceedings on the facts of torture and other inhuman treatment as a result of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine.

“The Office of the Prosecutor General reported that 5079 criminal offenses on the facts of torture, infliction of bodily harm or other inhuman treatment as a result of the full-scale invasion of Russia in Ukraine had been registered in the Unified register of pre-trial investigations,” noted the Office of the Prosecutor’s General of Ukraine.

As noted, 54 places of cruel treatment of the Ukrainian civilians, the so-called torture chambers, were found in the liberated from Russian troops territories of Ukraine. Currently, pre-trial investigations are underway in 855 criminal proceedings on war crimes against children related to Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, including 10 on the facts of sexual violence.

In total, the Prosecutor’s Offices are investigating 2415 proceedings on crimes committed against children and in the field of child protection.
