General Staff operational report May 4, 2023 on the Russian invasion of Ukraine

The 435th day of the Russia-Ukraine War: official operational information by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 04.05.2023.

The Russian Federation continues to wage an aggressive war. Despite significant losses, it refuses to abandon plans to occupy Ukrainian territory. The Russian army continues to disregard the laws and customs of war, using terrorist tactics and striking both military and civilian targets.

Today, in the night, the Russian Federation launched another massive attack on Ukrainian territory, using Iranian UAVs “Shahed-136/131”. 18 out of 24 were destroyed by Ukrainian military.

Today, Russian troops launched 6 missile strikes on the cities of Kramatorsk and Zaporizhzhia, carried out 66 airstrikes and made 33 rocket artillery strikes on Ukrainian military positions and civilian settlements. Unfortunately, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population, and private residential buildings, educational institutions, and other civilian infrastructure have been destroyed and damaged.

The probability of missile and airstrikes on the entire territory of Ukraine remains high.

The Russian armt continues to concentrate its main efforts on conducting offensive operations on the directions of Lyman, Bakhmut, and Mariinka – about 50 Russian attacks were repulsed. The most fierce battles are taking place near Bakhmut and Mariinka.

  • On the Volyn and Polissya directions, no signs of Russian formations for offensive were detected. On the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, Russian soldiers carried out artillery and mortar shelling of populated areas in Yeline, Mykolaivka, Ivanivka, Buchky, Hremiach of Chernihiv region; Uralove, Porokhon, Studenok, Shalygine, Rivne and Boyaro-Lezhachi, Stukalivka, Bilopillia, Oleksiivka, Yunakivka and Slavhorod of Sumy region, as well as Hlyboke, Vesele, Vovchanski Khutory, Karaiichne, Bochkove and Budarky in the Kharkiv region. Private houses were destroyed and damaged, and there were casualties among the civilian population.
  • On the Kupyansk direction, Russian troops did not conduct offensive actions. Populated areas of Kamianka, Dvorychna, Zapadne, Lymanskyi Pershyy, Kyslivka, Krokhmialne, and Berestove of Kharkiv region were subjected to artillery and mortar shelling.
  • On the Lyman direction, the Russian army carried out unsuccessful offensive actions in the area of the southwestern outskirts of Spivne. Artillery shelling affected Makiiivka, Andriivka, Hrekivka, Dibrova, and Bilohorivka of Luhansk region; Torske, Verkhniokamianske, and Spivne of Donetsk region. Fighting continues in the city of Bakhmut on the Bakhmut direction. In addition, during the day, Russian soldiers carried out unsuccessful offensive actions towards the populated areas of Bohdanivka and Markove. Nyzhniotepli, Vasiukivka, Novomarkove, Markove, Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Chasiv Yar, Dyliivka, Zalizne, and New York of the Donetsk region suffered from Russian shelling.
  • On the Avdiivka direction, the Russian army did not conduct offensive actions but shelled Avdiivka, Pershomaiske, Netaylove, and Karlivka of the Donetsk region.
  • On the Marinka direction, the Russian army is trying to improve its tactical position. Numerous Russian attacks have been repelled in the area of Marinka. At the same time, Krasnohorivka, Pobeda, and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region were shelled by Russian troops.
  • On the Shakhtarsk direction, Russian soldiers shelled Vuhledar, Novoukrainka, Prechistivka, and Shakhtarske in the Donetsk region.
  • On the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions, the Russian army continues to conduct defensive operations. It shelled more than 50 settlements, including Vremivka, Novosilka, and Novopil in the Donetsk region, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanilivka, and Orikhiv in the Zaporizhzhia region, Nikopol in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Dudchany, Zmiivka, Ivanivka, Dniprovskoe, Kizomys in Kherson region, and the city of Kherson.

Russian occupation forces continue to suffer heavy losses on the battlefield, with all medical facilities in temporarily occupied territory overwhelmed with wounded Russian soldiers. As a result, the Russian army continues to equip civilian educational institutions as medical facilities. For example, in the village of Myrne in the Zaporizhzhia region, Russian troops are setting up a military hospital in the sports hall of a local school. Russian soldiers are forcing the teaching staff to continue the educational process with mandatory attendance by schoolchildren.

During the day, the Aviation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine conducted six strikes on Russian personnel concentrations. In addition, during this day, four Lancet barrage munitions were destroyed.

Missile and artillery units struck five Russian personnel concentration areas, two ammunition depots, and one radio-electronic warfare station.
