The 459th day of the Russia-Ukraine War: official operational information by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 28.05.2023.

Russian offensive actions and impact on civilians

The Russian Federation is not abandoning its plans for further occupation of Ukrainian territory and continues to wage an aggressive war. The Russian army persists in launching attacks and shelling not only military targets but also civilian objects.
According to updated information, during this day, at night, the Russian Federation conducted another massive strike on Ukrainian territory, using Iranian strike drones Shahed. Ukrainian troops destroyed 58 out of 59 drones.

In total, throughout this day, the Russian army carried out 91 aerial strikes and conducted approximately 25 shelling attacks with multiple rocket launch systems on the positions of Ukrainian troops and populated areas. The probability of missile and aerial strikes across the entire territory of Ukraine remains high.

The Russian army continues to concentrate its main efforts on attempting to fully capture the Luhansk and Donetsk regions. During the day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled 18 Russian attacks.

Intensified frontline clashes and epicenters of conflict

  • The operational situation remains stable on the Volyn and Polissia directions, with no signs of Russian formations detected.
  • On the Siversk and Slobozhansk directions, the Russian army continues to maintain a military presence in border areas with Ukraine. During the day, it conducted aerial strikes in the areas of Kondrativka, Basivka, Mohrytsia, Myropillia, and Slavhorod in the Sumy region, as well as in Pletenivka and Vovchanske Khutory in the Kharkiv region. Russian troops carried out mortar and artillery shelling on the settlements of Karpovychi, Tymonovychi, Zalizny Mist, and Muravi in the Chernihiv region, as well as Novovasylivka, Seredyna-Buda, Prohres, Demyanivka, and Manukhivka in the Sumy region, and Liptsy, Hatysche, Pletenivka, Vovchansk, Mala Vovcha, and Budarky in the Kharkiv region.
  • On the Kupiansk direction, the Russian army conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the vicinity of Masiutivka in the Kharkiv region during the day. It carried out an aerial strike in the area of Kyslivka in the Kharkiv region. Russian artillery and mortar shelling targeted Kolodyazne, Krasne Pershe, Fiholivka, Novomlynsk, Dvorichna, Zapadne, Masiutivka, Kyslivka, and Berestove in the Kharkiv region.
  • On the Lyman direction, Russian soldiers did not conduct offensive actions during the day. They carried out aerial strikes in the areas of Yahidne in the Kharkiv region, Serhiivka and Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Ivanivka, Spirne, Rai-Oleksandrivka, and Vesele in the Donetsk region. Artillery shelling targeted Nevske, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, Torske, Verkhniokamianske, and Spirne in the Donetsk region.
  • On the Bakhmut direction, the Russian army conducted unsuccessful offensive actions northeast of Orikhovo-Vasylivka and in the direction of Ivanivske during the day. It carried out aerial strikes in the populated areas of Predtechyne, Bila Hora, Kurdiumivka, New York, and Yablunivka in the Donetsk region. Vasylivka, Pryvillia, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske, Stupochky, Predtechyne, Kostiantynivka, and Pivnichne in the Donetsk region were affected by Russian shelling.
  • On the Avdiivka direction, the Russian army did not conduct offensive actions. It carried out aerial strikes in the areas of Avdiivka, Vodyane, and Pervomaiske. Artillery shelling targeted Avdiivka, Pervomaiske, and Karlivka in the Donetsk region.
  • On the Marinka direction, Ukrainian troops repelled 12 Russian attacks in the area of Marinka. The Russian army carried out an aerial strike in the vicinity of Marinka. Additionally, Pobeda in the Donetsk region was subjected to Russian shelling.
  • On the Shakhtarsk direction, the Russian army conducted an aerial strike in the area of Vuhledar. It carried out shelling on the settlements of Paraskeviivka, Novomykhailivka, Vuhledar, Novoukrainka, Prechystivka, and Shakhtarske.
  • On the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions, the Russian army continues to conduct defensive operations. It carried out shelling on the settlements of Vremivka, Novopil in the Donetsk region; Olhivske, Huliaypole, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanilivka, Orikhiv, Novoandriivka, Mali Shcherbaky, and Stepnohrisk in the Zaporizhzhia region; Zolota Balka, Mykhailivka, Vesele, Kozatske, Mykolaivka, Lvove, Ivanivka, Antonivka, Dniprovsk, Kizomys in the Kherson region, and the city of Kherson.

Desertions of Russian troops and private military companies

In Lysychansk, Luhansk region, approximately 80 individuals deserted from the Storm-Z unit of Russian forces. They voluntarily left their combat positions. Additionally, in the Bachmut area, around 30 individuals deserted from the Wagner Private Military Company (PMC), also abandoning their combat positions and stealing military equipment.

Forced passportization and coercion in occupied territories

Forced passportization of Ukrainian citizens continues in the temporarily occupied territory of the Nyzhni Sirohozy Raion of the Kherson region. Russian troops constantly exert pressure on the local population, threatening them with deportation and confiscation of property. Specifically, local citizens with Ukrainian passports, driver’s licenses, and vehicle technical passports are threatened with confiscation if they refuse to obtain documents of the Russian model.

Ukrainian countermeasures

During the day, Ukrainian aviation carried out 13 strikes on Russian personnel and military equipment concentration areas, as well as 2 strikes on anti-aircraft missile complexes.

Units of missile forces and artillery struck three areas of armament and military equipment concentration, a S-300 anti-aircraft missile system, three command posts, and Russian ammunition depot.
