General Staff operational report May 23, 2023 on the Russian invasion of Ukraine

The 454th day of the Russia-Ukraine War: official operational information by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 23.05.2023.

Russian offensive actions and impact on civilians

During this day, there were no rocket strikes. However, the Russian army carried out 25 aviation strikes and conducted more than 20 shelling attacks with multiple-launch rocket systems on the positions of Ukrainian troops and populated areas. Unfortunately, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population, and private residential buildings and administrative infrastructure have been damaged.

The probability of missile and aviation strikes throughout the territory of Ukraine remains high.

The Russian army continues to concentrate its main efforts in the directions of Kupiansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Marinka. In total, during the day, there were 16 clashes in the mentioned areas of the front, with Bakhmut and Marinka remaining the epicenters of the fighting.

Russian army’s offensive actions

  • The operational situation remains unchanged on the Volyn and Polissia directions.
  • On the Siversk and Slobozhansk directions, the Russian army continues to maintain a military presence in the border areas with Ukraine. During the day, Russian soldiers conducted mortar and artillery shelling of the settlements of Khrynivka and Yeline in the Chernihiv region, Hudove, Vovkivka, Novomykolaivka, and Velyka Pysarivka in the Sumy region, as well as Stohni, Udy, Strylecha, Hlyboke, Morokhovets, Lyptsy, Neskuchne, Ohirtseve, Hatysche, Pletenivka, Vovchansk, Varvarivka, Nesterne, Budarky, and Zemlianky in the Kharkiv region.
  • On the Kupiansk direction, Russian troops did not conduct offensive operations during the day. The towns of Kamyanka, Topoli, Krasne Pershe, Novomlynsk, Dvorichna, Masyutivka, Mala Shapkivka, Kindrashivka, Kupiansk, Tabayivka, Berestove in the Kharkiv region, and Stelmakhivka in the Luhansk region were subjected to Russian artillery and mortar shelling.
  • On the Lyman direction, the Russian army carried out offensive actions towards Biloheorivka during the day but was unsuccessful. It also conducted an airstrike in that area. Artillery shelling affected, among others, Nevske and Biloheorivka in the Luhansk region, and Torske and Spirne in the Donetsk region.
  • On the Bakhmut direction, Russian military conducted unsuccessful offensive actions towards the settlement of Khromove during the day. Russian troops carried out air strikes in the areas of Bila Hora, Ozaryanivka, and Toretsk. The towns of Kramatorsk, Vasiukivka, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Hryhorivka, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Stupochky, Kostiantynivka, Bila Hora, Toretsk, Pivnichne, Pivdene, and New-York in the Donetsk region were affected by Russian shelling.
  • On the Avdiivka direction, Russian soldiers did not conduct offensive operations during the day. They carried out airstrikes in the areas of Novokalynove and Avdiivka. They conducted artillery shelling in the areas of the settlements of Keramik, Ocheretine, Lastochkyne, Avdiivka, Siverne, Vodyane, Pervomaiske, Netaylove, Karlivka, and Nevelske in the Donetsk region.
  • On the Marinka direction, Ukrainian troops repelled numerous Russian attacks in the area of the city of Marinka. At the same time, Krasnohorivka, Heorhiyivka, Maksymilianivka, Kurakhove, and Pobeda in the Donetsk region were subjected to Russian shelling.
  • On the Shakhtarsk direction, Russian military conducted an airstrike in the area of Prechystivka and shelled the settlements of Paraskeviivka, Novomykhailivka, Vuhledar, Bohoyavlenska, Zolota Nyva, and Velyka Novosilka.
  • On the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions, the Russian army continues defensive actions. It continues to destroy infrastructure in settlements near the front line. During this day, Russian soldiers carried out airstrikes on Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, and Stepove in the Zaporizhzhia region, and shelled Vremivka, Burlatske, Novosilka, Zelene Pole in the Donetsk region; Olhivske, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Bilohirya, Mali Shcherbaky, and Kamianske in the Zaporizhzhia region; and Zolota Balka, Vesele, Kozatske, Lvove, Antonivka, Kizomys, and Stanislav in the Kherson region, as well as the city of Kherson.

Russian use of civilian medical facilities

The Russian army continues to use civilian medical facilities in temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine for its own purposes. For instance, the Bilovodsk Central District Hospital has been transformed by Russian troops into a military hospital. Currently, the medical facility is overcrowded with Russian soldiers suffering injuries of varying severity.

Ukrainian countermeasures

The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out 14 strikes within the day on areas where Russian personnel and military equipment are concentrated, including 3 strikes on anti-aircraft missile complexes.

During this day, 4 Russian attack UAVs of the Shahed type were destroyed.

Units of the Missile Forces and Artillery struck 3 command posts, 4 areas of armament and military equipment concentration, 1 ammunition depot, 2 artillery units in firing positions, and 3 other significant Russian targets.
