General Staff operational report July 19, 2023 on the Russian invasion of Ukraine

The 511th day of the Russia-Ukraine War: official operational information by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 19.07.2023.

Russian offensive actions and impact on civilians 

The Russian Federation continues to kill the peaceful population of Ukraine and disregard the laws and customs of war, using tactics of terror, launching attacks, and carrying out shelling on both military and civilian targets.

Within a day, Russian troops launched another massive missile and aerial strike on the territory of Ukraine, using 16 sea-based cruise missiles Kalibr, 8 Kh-22 cruise missiles, 6 Oniks cruise missiles, 1 guided aviation missile Kh-59, and 32 strike UAVs of the Shahed type.

As a result of the combat operations, the air defense of the Air Force of Ukraine, along with other components of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, destroyed 13 Kalibr cruise missiles, 1 guided aviation missile Kh-59, and 23 strike UAVs of the Shahed type.

Additionally, the Russian army conducted 66 aviation strikes and carried out approximately 30 shelling attacks with multiple launch rocket systems.

The probability of missile and aerial strikes being carried out throughout the territory of Ukraine remains high.

The Russian army continues to concentrate its main efforts on the Kupiansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Marinka directions, where heavy fighting is ongoing. Within a day, 19 combat clashes took place.

Intensified frontline clashes and epicenters of conflict

  • In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains unchanged, with no significant changes observed in the formation of offensive groupings. Identified units of the Belarusian Armed Forces are performing tasks in the border areas with Ukraine.
  • In the Siversk and Slobozhansk directions, the Russian army maintains a military presence. It has conducted mortar and artillery shelling on more than 20 settlements, including Horsk, Yeline, Leonivka in the Chernihiv region; Seredyna-Buda, Bachivsk in the Sumy region; and Udy, Kozacha Lopan, Strilecha, Vovchansk, Mala Vovcha, Budarky in the Kharkiv region.
  • In the Kupiansk direction, Ukrainian soldiers are holding the defense steadfastly. The Russian army carried out an aviation strike in the area of Kyslivka. Artillery and mortar shelling by Russian troops affected Dvorichna, Zakhidne, Synkivka, Kyslivka, Berestove in the Kharkiv region.
  • In the Lyman direction, Russian troops conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region and Serebrianka in the Donetsk region. Artillery shelling affected the settlements of Nevske, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Torske, Verkhniokamianske, Berestove, Rozdolivka in the Donetsk region.
  • In the Bakhmut direction, under intense Russian artillery fire, Ukrainian troops successfully repelled attacks in the area of Bohdanivka in the Donetsk region. Over 10 settlements, including Vasiukivka, Markove, Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske, Stupochky, Oleksandro-Shultyne in the Donetsk region, suffered from Russian artillery shelling.
  • In the Avdiivka direction, under intense fire from Russian aviation and artillery, Ukrainian military successfully repelled attacks by Russian troops in the area of Nevelske. The Russian army conducted missile and aerial strikes in the area of Avdiivka. At the same time, it carried out artillery shelling on more than 10 settlements, including Lastochkyne, Avdiivka, Karlivka, and Nevelske in the Donetsk region.
  • In the Marinka direction, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to hold back the advance of Russian troops in the areas of Marinka and Krasnohorivka. The Russian army conducted shelling on more than 10 settlements, including Krasnohorivka, Marinka, Hеorhiivka, and Pobeda in the Donetsk region.
  • In the Shakhtarsk direction, Russian soldiers shelled more than 10 settlements, including Paraskoviivka, Novomykhailivka, Vuhledar, and Blahodatne in the Donetsk region.
  • In the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions, the Russian army concentrates its main efforts on preventing further advancement of Ukrainian troops. It made unsuccessful attempts to regain lost positions in the area north of Pryiutne in the Zaporizhzhia region. More than 20 settlements, including Novodarivka, Olhivske, Malynivka, Huliaypole, Zaliznychne, Bilohirya, Lobkove in the Zaporizhzhia region; Dudchany, Kozatske, Lvove, Ivanivka, Antonivka, Berehove, Kizomys in the Kherson region, and the city of Kherson, suffered from artillery shelling.

Meanwhile, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue their offensive operation in the Melitopol and Berdiansk directions, consolidate their positions at achieved frontlines, inflict artillery fire on identified Russian targets, and carry out counter-battery measures.

The Russian army continues to convert civilian infrastructure facilities in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine for its own needs. For example, in the cultural center of Kalanchak village council in the Kherson region, Russian troops have set up a military hospital, where currently over 50 Russian soldiers are undergoing treatment and rehabilitation for various degrees of injuries.

Ukrainian countermeasures

The aviation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine conducted 5 strikes on personnel concentration areas within the past day. Additionally, Ukrainian troops have destroyed 2 tactical-level reconnaissance UAVs.

The units of the missile forces and artillery struck 3 Russian personnel, weapons, and military equipment concentration areas within the day, destroying 9 artillery systems in firing positions, 2 air defense systems, and Russian EW station.
