General Staff operational report August 4, 2023 on the Russian invasion of Ukraine

The 527th day of the Russia-Ukraine War: official operational information by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 04.08.2023.

Russian offensive actions and impact on civilians 

During the day, the Russian army carried out 39 aviation strikes, using 2 Shahed-136/131 attack drones (all of which were destroyed), and conducted 43 rocket artillery attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian areas. Unfortunately, there were casualties and injuries among the civilian population, and residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were also damaged due to the Russian terrorist attacks.

The probability of missile and aviation strikes across the entire territory of Ukraine remains high. In the past 24 hours, there have been 30 military engagements.

Intensified frontline clashes and epicenters of conflict

  • In the Volyn and Polissya directions, the operational situation remains relatively unchanged.
  • In the Siversk and Slobozhansk directions, the Russian army carried out aviation strikes in the areas of Wolfyne and Kostiantynivka in Sumy Oblast. It also conducted mortar and artillery shelling on more than 25 populated areas, including Khrinivka, Bleshnia, and Yanzhulivka in Chernihiv Oblast, and Kozache, Boyaro-Lezhachi, Kindrativka in Sumy Oblast, as well as Hatysche, Vovchansk, and Bochkove in Kharkiv Oblast.
  • In the Kupiansk direction, more than 10 populated areas, including Zapadne, Kindrashivka, Petropavlivka, Kucherivka, and Kupiansk in Kharkiv Oblast, were subjected to artillery and mortar shelling.
  • In the Lyman direction, the Russian army shelled the populated areas of Nevske, Bilohorivka in Luhansk Oblast, and Torske, Verkhniokamianske, and Spirne in Donetsk Oblast.
  • In the Bakhmut direction, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are repelling the Russian army in the areas of Klishchiivka and Kurdiumivka. Over 10 populated areas, including Vasiukivka, Bohdanivka, Hryhorivka, Markove, and Ivanivske in Donetsk Oblast, were affected by Russian artillery shelling.
  • In the Avdiivka direction, under intense fire from Russian aviation and artillery, Ukrainian military successfully repelled attacks by Russian troops in the Avdiivka area. More than 15 populated areas, including Keramik, Avdiivka, Vodiane, Pervomaiske, Karlivka, and Halytsynivka in Donetsk Oblast, were targeted in artillery attacks.
  • In the Marinka direction, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to hold back the Russian troops’ advancement in the areas of Marinka and Krasnohorivka. The Russian army conducted aviation strikes in the Krasnohorivka area and shelled over 10 populated areas, including Krasnohorivka, Hostre, Marinka, Pobeda, Novomykhailivka, Paraskoviiivka, and Katerynivka in Donetsk Oblast.
  • In the Shakhtarsk direction, the Russian army made unsuccessful attempts to regain lost positions in the Blahodatne area. It carried out aviation strikes in the Staromykhailivka area and shelled Blahodatne, Vuhledar, Bohoyavlenka Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, and Velyka Novosilka in Donetsk Oblast, as well as Staromykhailivka and Levadne in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
  • In the Zaporizhzhia direction, Russian troops conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the Novopokrovka area. They launched aviation strikes in the areas of Mala Tokmachka, Orikhove, and Novodanilivka in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The Russian army is focusing its main efforts on preventing further advancement of Ukrainian troops. More than 15 populated areas, including Malynivka, Huliaypole, Zaliznychne, Huliaypilske, and Yehorivka in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, were affected by Russian artillery shelling.
  • In the Kherson direction, Russian soldiers carried out an aviation strike in the area of Odradokamianka. More than 20 populated areas, including Kachkarivka, Respublikanets, Zmiivka, Beryslav, Molodizhne, and Kherson in Kherson Oblast, as well as Ochakiv in Mykolaiv Oblast, were subjected to Russian artillery shelling.

The Russian army continues to conceal its losses and actively employs mobile crematoriums for this purpose. Specifically, it has been discovered that one such crematorium operates 24/7 in the northeastern part of the occupied city of Melitopol in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The bodies of the fallen Russian soldiers are transported using cargo trucks. Local residents also complain about a constant stench of decomposing bodies in the city, especially at night.

Ukrainian countermeasures

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue their offensive operations in the Melitopol and Berdiansk directions, consolidating their positions at achieved frontlines and conducting counter-battery actions.

During the day, the aviation of the Ukrainian army carried out 7 strikes on the areas of concentration of Russian personnel, weapons, and military equipment.

The missile forces and artillery units struck 9 artillery positions and 2 areas of concentration of Russian personnel, weapons, and military equipment throughout the day.
