General Staff operational report August 2, 2023 on the Russian invasion of Ukraine

The 525th day of the Russia-Ukraine War: official operational information by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 02.08.2023.

Russian offensive actions and impact on civilians 

During the day, the Russian Federation carried out another aerial strike using Iranian-made Shahed drones in Ukraine. The Ukrainian Air Force, in coordination with the anti-aircraft defense and other components of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, managed to destroy 23 of these attack drones.

The Russian army conducted 5 missile strikes, 86 aerial attacks, and 36 shelling attacks using rocket artillery on the positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian settlements. Unfortunately, there were civilian casualties.

The probability of further missile and aerial strikes across the entire territory of Ukraine remains very high.

Throughout the day, there were 33 military clashes.

Intensified frontline clashes and epicenters of conflict

  • The operational situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions remained relatively stable without significant changes.
  • However, in the Siversk and Slobodzhansk directions, the Russian army launched aerial attacks in the area of Kozacha Lopan in the Kharkiv Oblast. It also carried out mortar and artillery shelling on more than 20 populated areas, including Karpovychi and Novovasylivka in the Chernihiv Oblast, and Wolfyne, Krasnopillia, Rozhkovychi, Stara Huta in the Sumy Oblast, as well as Tymofiivka, Veterynarne, and Okhrimivka in the Kharkiv Oblast.
  • In the Kupiansk direction, Russian troops conducted aerial strikes in the areas of Petropavlivka and Kyslivka. They also subjected Kamianka, Dvorichna, Zapadne, Kindrashivka, Krasne Pershe, and Kupiansk in the Kharkiv Oblast to artillery and mortar shelling.
  • In the Lyman direction, the Russian army carried out aerial strikes in the areas of Bilohorivka in the Luhansk Oblast, as well as Serebrianka and Spirne in the Donetsk Oblast. Additionally, settlements like Nevske, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Verkhniokamianske, Spirne, and Torske in Donetsk Oblast were targeted by artillery shelling.
  • In the Bakhmut direction, the Russian army made unsuccessful attempts to regain lost positions west of Kurdiumivka, south of Andriivka, and west of Klishchiivka in Donetsk Oblast. Russian troops also conducted aerial strikes in the areas of Druzhba and New York. Over 10 populated areas, including Vasiukivka, Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, and Ivanivske in Donetsk Oblast, were affected by Russian artillery shelling.
  • In the Avdiivka direction, Russian soldiers carried out an aerial strike in the area of Avdiivka. Settlements like Novokalynove, Stepove, Berdychiv, Avdiivka, and Pervomaiske in Donetsk Oblast experienced artillery shelling.
  • In the Marinka direction, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continued to restrain the advance of Russian troops in the vicinity of the city of Marinka. The Russian army conducted shelling on populated areas such as Krasnohorivka, Oleksandropil, Hostre, Marinka, and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk Oblast.
  • In the Shakhtarsk direction, Russian troops carried out an aerial strike in the area of Staromykhailivka. They also made unsuccessful attempts to regain lost positions west of Staromykhailivka and north of Urozhaine. More than 10 populated areas, including Vuhledar, Vodiane, Blahodatne, and Storozhove in Donetsk Oblast, were subjected to Russian artillery shelling.
  • In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the Russian army concentrated its main efforts on preventing further advancement of Ukrainian troops. It conducted aerial strikes in the areas of Mala Tokmacha and Pyatykhatky in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Over 10 populated areas, including Novodarivka, Bilohiria, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, and Kamianske in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, were affected by Russian artillery shelling.
  • In the Kherson direction, Russian troops carried out an aerial strike in the area of Odradokamianka. More than 15 populated areas, including Vesele, Dudchany, Dniprovske, Tiahynka, and the city of Kherson, experienced Russian artillery shelling.

Ukrainian countermeasures

At the same time, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue their offensive operation in the Melitopol and Berdiansk directions, consolidating their positions at the achieved frontlines and conducting counter-battery measures.

During the day, the aviation of the Ukrainian army carried out 9 strikes on Russian personnel, weapons, and military equipment concentrations, as well as 1 strike on Russian anti-aircraft missile system.

Units of the missile forces and artillery hit 20 artillery systems at their firing positions, 1 radar station, 2 command posts, 1 area with concentrated weapons and military equipment, 1 anti-aircraft defense system, 1 area with concentrated Russian personnel, and 2 ammunition depots of the Russian army.
