Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is completely de-energized due to Russian shelling

The State Enterprise National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine “Energoatom” informed on March 9, 2023, that the last power line of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP was damaged due to Russian missile attack.

“Currently, the plant is de-energized and switched to shutdown mode for the sixth time during the occupation, power units 5 and 6 are being put into cold shutdown, and 18 diesel generators have been switched on to power ZNPP’s own needs,” reported the State Enterprise National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine “Energoatom”.

The “Energatom” emphasized that if the external power supply of the nuclear power plant cannot be restored within 10 days, an accident with radiation consequences for the whole world may occur.

The Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko also noted about the shutdown of Zaporizhzhia NPP.

“Another barbaric missile attack on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine. Russians are putting the world on the brink of a nuclear catastrophe. And this is the day after negotiations with the UN on the security zone around the ZNPP,” said the Minister of Energy of Ukraine.
