Yield of winter grain in Ukraine projected at 22.7 mln tonnes

The yield of winter grain crops is expected at 22.7 million tonnes provided the favorable weather conditions, the press service of the Ukrainian AgriBusiness Club Association (UCAB) reported.

“With favorable weather conditions the gross yield of winter grain crops is expected to reach 22.7 million tonnes, according to UCAB experts` estimates,” the press service said in a statement.

The potential yield of winter crops may grow due to the timely application of mineral fertilizers, it says. According to UCAB, the application of mineral fertilizers to areas under winter crops in 2016 is considerably faster than in 2015. As of March 31, 2016, fertilizers had been added to 92% of the areas planted with wheat, 94% areas with rye, and 96% areas with barley, as compared to last year`s 86% of fields of wheat, 82% of fields of rye and 83% of fields sown with barley.

As UaPosition reported earlier, Ukrainian farmers, excluding those working in the temporarily occupied Crimea and the Anti-Terrorist Operation zone in eastern Ukraine, harvested 60.1 million tonnes of grain and leguminous crops in 2015, which was 5.8% down on 2014.
Areas under agricultural crops occupied 26.7 million ha in 2016, similar to last year`s acreage.

The Agrarian Ministry projects that areas sown with grain crops will be 14.6 million ha, accounting for 55% of the total cultivated areas. The areas cultivated with spring grain crops are estimated at 7.5 million ha, including 2.6 million ha under early crops.
