“This is the will of Moscow, not the free will of Ukraine or its people,” said State Department spokesperson Ned Price.

The US believes that Russia will try to annex occupied Ukrainian territories following the results of the so-called referendums.

“But no matter what President Putin and his enablers try to claim, these areas are and will remain part of Ukraine. Ukraine has every right to continue to defend its sovereignty and its territorial integrity.”

Ned Price suggested that additional sanctions could be imposed on Moscow. His country would continue to work with its allies and partners to put more pressure on Russia.

“The United States will never recognize Russia’s attempts to annex parts of Ukraine.”

US State Department spokesman also said that “there would be catastrophic, severe, strong, profound implications for Russia” should it carry out a nuclear attack of any kind.
