Vladyslav Kaskiv, the former head of the State Agency for Investment and National Projects of Ukraine, who has been detained in Panama, owns real estate there, and one of the facilities is estimated at over EUR 500,000, according to the political news portal Ukrayinska Pravda.
Ukrayinska Pravda quotes Deputy Prosecutor General Yevhen Enin who says the Ukrainian law enforcement agencies are aware of Kaskiv`s several luxury facilities whose value exceeds the sum of bail set for him.
”According to our information, this is not the only facility Kaskiv owns in Panama,” he said.
Yet, he did not mention the total value of the property owned by Kaskiv in that country.
He also said that it was early to speak about the payment of the bail for Kaskiv because of an eight hours` time lag.
”They will have to report to us if bail has been put up and we`ll inform about this,” he added.
As earlier reported by UNIAN, Kaskiv headed the State Agency for Investment and National Projects of Ukraine from 2010 to 2014.
On August 18, 2016, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko announced in Kyiv that Kaskiv had been detained by Panama officials.
According to Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, Kaskiv siphoned off UAH 255 million ($10.2 million) from Ukraine.
At the end of March this year, Kaskiv was put on an international wanted list on the charge of embezzlement of public funds from 2012-2013 (UAH 7.5 million), through an agreement on advertising services, which was brokered by Kaskiv with a limited liability company.
The Prosecutor General`s Office (PGO) of Ukraine says that Kaskiv is charged under Part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (acquisition of property by abuse of office, committed on preliminary arrangement by a group of persons on a large scale) and under Part 2 of Article 366 of the Criminal Code (forgery on duty, which entails grave consequences).
Enin announced on August 20 that the PGO had sent a request to Panama for the extradition of Kaskiv.
On September 8, Enin reported that the Ukrainian prosecutors had got official Interpol confirmation that Kaskiv had been detained in Panama for up to 40 days with $600,000 bail.
He forecasts that the detainee will be extradited to Ukraine within two or three months.
Kaskiv also applied for political asylum in Panama.
