Ukraine`s Culture Ministry estimates costs of hosting Eurovision

Ukrainian Culture Minister Yevhen Nyshchuk says that Ukraine`s costs to host the Eurovision song contest in 2017 will be at least EUR 14.5 million, according to TV news service tsn.ua.
Sweden, which hosted the contest in 2016, spent this amount of money, and Ukraine may allocate a similar sum for the competition in 2017, he said during the Pravo na Vladu political talk show, tsn.ua reported.
Nyshchuk said that the Cabinet pins hopes on sponsors` support.
”These are usually sponsors` funds from different media companies, sponsors. This happens almost every time,” he said.
However, he said that hosting the Eurovision 2017 contest is not only a host city`s spending but also raising the region`s attractiveness and earnings.
”I had a working visit [to Sweden] at the invitation of the Swedish culture minister amid Eurovision in 2016, therefore I witnessed Jamala`s great victory. Prior to that, I met with media moguls who had been organizing that unbelievably high tech show. They said that in fact they were making money. People`s concerns and Ukrainian Finance Minister Oleksandr Danylyuk`s anxiety about earnings and expenditures are natural,” he added.
He said that Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko and Kherson`s authorities had called him regarding this contest.
”I`ve heard that Odesa, Lviv and Dnipro are ready [to host the contest]. I have had calls from Kherson. This is the understanding of what we all can do,” he said.
Ukrainian singer of Crimean Tatar origin Jamala won the 2016 Eurovision song contest in Stockholm, Sweden, on May 14, 2016, with her entry 1944, which tells about the forced deportation of Crimean Tatars from Crimea under Joseph Stalin`s rule.
Ukraine will host the contest next year.
