Ukraine would sue Russia over violation of UN Convention on Law of Sea – Foreign Minister

This week Ukraine will lodge with the International Court a comprehensive large-scale lawsuit against the Russian Federation concerning the violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, Ukraine`s Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin told ICTV, according to Ukrainska Pravda.

”The first big lawsuit will be filed just this week. It regards the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. In fact, it is a comprehensive suit, since it includes such fundamental issues as the use of marine space, violation of environmental safety, and also [the issues of] the objects of cultural heritage. It is a very large-scale claim,” he said.

According to the minister, any claim put forward in the framework of these conventions provides for three stages: the rights, restitution, and compensation of those rights.

”Of course, we will go our way to compensation, it is absolutely clear,” said Klimkin.
