Ukraine sees ‘elections’ in Abkhazia as illegitimate

Ukraine does not recognize the legitimacy of the so-called “presidential elections” in Abkhazia (Georgia), the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has reported.
“Ukraine does not recognize the legitimacy of the so-called ‘presidential elections,’ which were held contrary to the principles of international law, democratic values and human rights in Abkhazia, Georgia, on August 24, 2014,” reads the statement.
The ministry said that Ukraine reaffirms its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within internationally recognized borders and the policy of non-recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
“Ukraine calls for the settlement of the conflict in Georgia based on the principles and norms of international law,” the ministry said.
