Currently, Ukrainian grain is exported through Romania and Poland.

Senik added that global food security is under threat, as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has stopped grain exports from the Black Sea, which has led to massive deficits and sharp rises in prices.

Ukraine is the world’s fourth-largest grain exporter and there are some 30 million tonnes of grain stored in Ukrainian-held territory which it is trying to export via road, river and rail.

Without access to its Black Sea ports, Ukraine would at best be able to export 20 million tonnes of grains next year, these would likely be more sunflower seeds than corn and wheat.

Dmytro Senik that Ukraine is negotiating with the Baltic states to create a third route for food exports.

“These routes are not ideal because they create a kind of ‘bottleneck’. At the same time, we are doing everything possible to develop these routes.”
