According to the report of the British Ministry of Defence on October 7, 2022, Russian armed forces abandon heavy armored vehicles during retreat or surrender. More than half of the tank fleet of Ukraine consists of trophy vehicles.

As noted in the summary, re-purposed trophy Russian equipment currently constitutes a significant part of Ukraine’s military equipment.
“Ukraine has likely captured at least 440 Russian Main Battle Tanks, and around 650 other armoured vehicles since the invasion. Over half of Ukraine’s currently fielded tank fleet potentially consists of captured vehicles.”
Russian troops are characterized by a low level of training and a low level of combat discipline, as they cannot destroy undamaged equipment before withdrawing from their positions.
With Russian formations under severe strain in several sectors and increasingly demoralized troops, Russia will likely continue to lose heavy weaponry.
