The Russians do not let the Red Cross investigate the attack that killed Ukrainian war prisoners

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on July 31 that they have not yet received permission to visit the site of the attack against Ukrainian prisoners of war in Russian-occupied Olenivka in the Donetsk region.

“Families must receive urgent news and answers on what happened to their loved ones. The parties must do everything in their power, including through impartial investigations, to help determine the facts behind the attack and bring clarity to this issue,” the ICRC said.

Red Cross groups were ready to go to Olenivka, as well as, medical, forensic and humanitarian teams.

“It is extremely important that the ICRC be granted immediate access to the prison facility in Olenivka and other places where the wounded and dead could be transported to carry out our humanitarian mission.”

The committee added that the ICRC’s functions or mandate do not include conducting public investigations into war crimes.

In addition, Russia has not yet responded to Ukraineʼs demands for the return of the bodies of the dead Azov war prisoners.
