Steinmeier calls for preservation of Ukraine’s unity

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called for “every effort” to be made to preserve Ukraine’s unity.
He said this at a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday after a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“Now we must make every effort to ensure that the difficult first steps after the Minsk agreements could be implemented and that our capabilities allowed us to influence the fact that the preservation of Ukraine’s unity could be guaranteed,” he said.
Steinmeier stressed the need to improve control over the Ukrainian-Russian border, including by involving technical support with the use of drones, and finally withdraw militants and heavy artillery from the Donbas buffer zone.
In his opinion, the conflict in Ukraine still poses a threat to “peace order” in Europe. “The responsibility of our generation is to prevent a new split in Europe,” the German diplomat said.
