State Department not understanding Russian sanctions

Professional experts from the U.S. State Department have responded to the introduction by Russia of sanctions regarding a ban on imports to Russia of certain food products. They do not understand how depriving Russian citizens of food can improve the situation in the country.
U.S. State Department’s Coordinator for Sanctions Policy Daniel Fried said this at a briefing in Kyiv on Thursday, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“I don’t understand how depriving the Russian people of access to good food is going to help anyone,” he said, adding that the Russian government should explain why such sanctions are a positive step in the interests of Russia.
Fried said that Russia through its steps may itself worsen the situation in the country as a result of sanctions imposed by the United States and the EU.
