UN Secretary-General calls to protect freedom of speech

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an end to ”persecution of journalists,” saying that freedom of the media is the guarantee of peace and justice, according to the UN News Center referring to Guterres`s message dedicated to World Press Freedom Day marked on May 3.

He claimed that journalists often risk their freedom, health, and life to convey the truth and prevent the dominance of disinformation, the UN News Center reported.

”We need leaders to defend a free media. This is crucial to counter prevailing misinformation. And we need everyone to stand for our right to truth,” the UN head stated.

Guterres noted that media representatives are often exposed to serious risks so that the world to learn the truth and to give the floor to the most disadvantaged people in dangerous places. Because of this, media professionals often become victims of vile slander and sexual violence; they are arrested, maimed and even killed. In this regard, he urged not to allow such actions.

If we defend journalists, their reports will be able to change this world, Guterres added.

Memo. The UN General Assembly proclaimed World Press Freedom Day in December 1993. Since then, events devoted to the anniversary of the adoption of the Windhoek Declaration have been held all over the world every year on May 3.
