According to him, Putin lives by the ideas of the Russian Empire of the XVII century and thinks only about expanding Russia’s borders and capturing new lands. He noted that with its aggressive policy, Russia has turned the Baltic states “into a citadel that will never be captured.”
“Before Russia’s aggression against Georgia, there was virtually no army in Latvia, but since August 2008 we have been working closely on various military construction programs. As a result, when Russia occupied Crimea in 2014, we already had the military infrastructure and NATO forces. And after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the military contingent of the Baltic states and, in particular, Latvia has increased tenfold, thus the aggressive policy of the Kremlin has given us and other Baltic states the opportunity to find armed forces we never had. Therefore, any attack on Latvia would be madness now, “Zatlers said.
He noted that today there are servicemen from nine NATO countries in Latvia, as well as a large number of modern military equipment, which allowed to provide military assistance to Ukraine.
