“As of yesterday [February 16, 2023 – ed.], there are 16,207 officially verified children in the territory of the Russian Federation. These are children about whom I, as an ombudsman, know, from which Ukrainian city these children are and approximately where they are in the territory of the Russian Federation. In fact, this number of children is much higher. We assume that this number reaches approximately 150 thousand children. Russia says about the number of 733 thousand Ukrainian children that Russia keeps on its territory. However, in our opinion, this number is exaggerated,” explained the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights.

According to Dmytro Lubinets, most children were taken to Russia from those regions that were temporarily occupied, namely Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Crimea. Other violations were also recorded there.

Ukraine is now seeking to legally recognize the deportation of Ukrainian children during the war as genocide.
