Poltorak ordered to draw up national security and defense strategy

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has instructed the Defense Ministry to prepare major strategic defense planning documents.
He said this while introducing newly appointed Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak to the staff of the Defense Ministry, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“Given the current military and political situation, I am instructing the Defense Ministry to ensure the preparation of major defense planning documents,” he said.
In particular, the Defense Ministry, along with the General Staff, should create a new national security and defense strategy. In addition, “it is necessary to immediately draft” amendments to the military doctrine, he said. “Current conditions give us a lot of reasons for that,” he said.
He added that the new wording of the state program for the development of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and a state program for the development of weapons and military equipment should also be drawn up.
“We must finally stop the fact that our troops, our heroes are fighting with weapons of the Second World War and sometimes of the First World War. Their heroism should be ensured and supported with the latest samples of high-precision weapons,” Poroshenko said.
