”No one postponed anything”: European Parliament source elaborates on date of Ukraine visa liberalisation vote

The issue of visa liberalization for Ukraine will be put to a vote in the European Parliament immediately after the completion of inter-institutional negotiations, while the forecast date of April 3, 2017 is not mandatory, an UNIAN correspondent in Brussels reported citing her source in the EP.

”No one postponed anything,” the source said, responding to a question about the new forecast date (April 3, 2017) of first reading consideration of ”Ukraine visa lib”, published on the EP website, instead of the earlier announced date of February 1, 2017.

”No formal decisions have been taken on the matter, as the date could be changed. The thing is that as soon as the EU Council announces the beginning of inter-institutional negotiations, they could be completed within a day, and the matter could be put to a vote at the next plenary session. The task of the European Parliament is to adopt this decision as soon as possible,” the source in the EP has told UNIAN.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the European Parliament has slated its decision on visa waivers for Ukraine for April 2017, according to technical information on the EP`s official website.

Earlier, the EP reported on its website that in case of a positive completion of the inter-institutional negotiations on granting Ukraine a visa-free regime, MEPs may vote the issue February 1, 2017, which is also a delay from the previously stated date of January 18, 2017.

Today, December 15, the European Parliament adopted the proposals on a visa waiver suspension mechanism. The decision must now be approved by the EU Council.
