“We have made significant progress in agreeing on specific conditions, and elements of a new defense model, and we have heard that several Allies are ready to provide additional forces to strengthen this model. This will mean more NATO forward-deployed combat formations, to strengthen our battlegroups in the eastern part of the alliance, more air, sea and cyber defenses, as well as pre-positioned equipment and weapons stockpiles,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said

He later specified that the basis of the Alliance’s new defense model on the eastern flank would be three pillars.

“The first is to increase the advanced presence with more combat operations, and we have already increased our presence. In the last few months, we have doubled the number of combat groups in the east from four to eight.”

The second pillar of the model is the preliminary deployment of military equipment to save time in conditions where the mobilization of forces is required.

“And the third element is the preliminary definition of units – these are the forces that will be trained in a certain area, where they will have certain responsibilities. That is, not all forces will be deployed, and some of them will be deployed in advance and others – in the home country be ready to move if necessary, “Stoltenberg explained.

He concluded that the new model of NATO’s eastern flank defense would “significantly strengthen our capacity for deterrence and defense throughout the Alliance.”
