Naftogaz CEO: Ukraine may buy Russian gas but only on its own terms

Ukraine may purchase Russian gas in the current heating season, but only on its own terms of price and delivery, Naftogaz CEO Andriy Kobolev said on one of TV channels.

”There is no politics in this issue. This is law and commerce. We are always interested in having a wide range of suppliers. If Gazprom agrees to our conditions, we will sign an additional agreement and consider an option of buying their gas,” Kobolev said.

He did not specify, what conditions were the most acceptable for Ukraine but noted that under the current contract from 2009, Ukraine, in case of buying fuel in Russia, should have carried out prepayment for fuel in December in the amount of no less than 3 billion cubic meters, which in monetary terms was about $600 million. Such a scenario is not suitable for our country because Ukraine is ready to offer Russia to sign off an additional agreement – the so-called ”winter package,” stipulating all aspects of fuel procurement.

Kobolev said that the discussion of the conditions of the ”winter package” is to be held in Brussels on December 9.

”The negotiations will be about that – about winter package,” he said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine does not buy gas in the Russian Federation for a year and imports fuel only from the European suppliers on the reverse scheme, as well as uses gas of its own production. According to the government plan, by 2020, Ukraine will increase its own production of fuel in the amounts necessary to fully meet its needs.
