Merkel: EU to discuss new sanctions against Russia

The heads of state and government of the European Union will discuss the possible extension of sanctions against Russia at an extraordinary summit on Saturday, August 30.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said this at a press conference in Berlin, Deutsche Welle reported.
“This issue [of sanctions] will be put on the agenda of the summit, and we will ask ourselves how to respond,” Merkel said, recalling that the EU has always made it clear that further sanctions will be discussed in the event of further escalation of the situation in Ukraine.
She added that the EU wants a diplomatic solution to the crisis and “will not weaken its aspirations,” but the situation after a meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Petro Poroshenko in Minsk has worsened.
“We get reports of increased presence of Russian soldiers, new destabilization and new movements of separatists in the areas where it was quiet earlier,” Merkel said.
