Member of European Parliament names conditions for visa waiver for Ukraine

Despite formal implementation by Kyiv of all requirements of the European Commission needed to be granted a visa-free regime, the European Parliament believes that Brussels needs a special mechanism that will give it the ”levers for monitoring the implementation of anti-corruption legislation and judicial reform” in Ukraine, the Ukrainian service of Deutsche Welle reported.

The mechanism of suspension of a visa-free regime, which is currently under development, should be supplemented by a requirement to continue the implementation of necessary standards and criteria, according to Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, the rapporteur on Ukraine in the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament.

He also noted that a visa-free regime should be provided to Ukraine now, but he advises Kyiv not to forget that along with this, the mechanism of suspension of a visa-free regime will be presented as well as soon as its provisions are worked out.

After the approval of the visa liberalization report in the appropriate committee of the European Parliament, the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the European Council are to hold tripartite negotiations. When the agreement is reached between these bodies, the resolution on visa liberalization for Ukraine will be put to the vote in the European Parliament.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the European Parliament`s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) on Monday approved a report on visa-free travel for Ukraine and provided a mandate for the launch of talks between the EU`s institutions.
