Japan will cooperate with Ukraine in the construction of small modular reactors

The Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushcnenko had a meeting with Matsuda Kuninori, the Ambassador of Japan to Ukraine on January 25, 2023. As a result, Japan plans to take part in projects to restore the Ukrainian energy sector based on the latest technologies, in particular, to cooperate in the construction of small modular reactors and jointly implement hydrogen projects.

“We are open to active cooperation in the field of construction of small modular reactors and have significant potential for the implementation of hydrogen projects. Ukraine has professionals and technical capabilities that will allow us to become one of the leaders in these innovative areas,” emphasized the Energy Minister of Ukraine.

The two leaders also discussed issues of nuclear and radiation safety at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, the current needs of the energy sector of Ukraine in the context of Russia’s constant attacks on energy facilities, and bilateral cooperation on the restoration and reconstruction of the energy sector of Ukraine based on the latest technologies.

Matsuda Kuninori said that the issue of ensuring nuclear and radiation safety is very important for his country, and Japan was ready to deepen cooperation with Ukraine in this direction.
