Italy provides funding to improve health services in eastern Ukraine

The Government of Italy recently made a $ 250,000 contribution to WHO to improve life-saving health care services and sustainable access to quality primary and secondary health care for affected populations of eastern Ukraine, according to ReliefWeb.

”The Italian Government continues to support humanitarian activities in Ukraine with the aim of easing the suffering of people in need of assistance,” said Davide La Cecilia, Italian Ambassador to Ukraine, reliefweb.int reported.

Collaboration between WHO and the Government of Italy will strengthen and expand disease surveillance and response in the country. Other key efforts will focus on enhancing laboratory capacities, providing technical guidance on priority public health issues and risks, and providing access to quality trauma and injury care services (including rehabilitation) to those affected by the conflict.

”Thanks to funding from the Italian Government, we will be able to fill critical gaps in health service delivery for the conflict-affected population and enhance access to essential quality health care services,” said Luigi Migliorini, WHO Representative to Ukraine ad interim.

”Specific efforts will be made to provide supplies for chronic diseases, maintenance of medical facilities, trauma and injury care supplies and selected required training.”

WHO and partners continue their efforts to improve the availability of essential quality health care services in Ukraine by offering support to static health facilities, mobile teams and outreach services, and by strengthening capabilities for detecting and responding to disease outbreaks in a timely manner.
