Head of EU-Ukraine Association Committee in European Parliament demits office early

Member of the European Parliament, Head of the Delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee Andrej Plenkovic relinquished his mandate ahead of schedule, an UNIAN correspondent in Brussels reported Thursday

From October 14, 2016, when will the first meeting of the newly elected parliament of Croatia is to be held, Mr. Plenkovic will no longer be Member of the European Parliament and Head of the  Delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee, the UNIAN correspondent was told in the European Parliament.

The new committee head will be elected in the coming weeks.

It is noted that performing the functions of a member of the national parliament is incompatible with the being a member of the European Parliament.

According to the UNIAN correspondent`s sources, Plenkovic formally resigned Wednesday. This move was prompted by the fact that the politician had been elected to the national parliament, where his Croatian Democratic Union won the elections. The politician is also a potential candidate for the post of Prime Minister of Croatia.

Plenkovic is known for his support of Ukraine.
