Granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership is in the interests of Europe, – President of the European Parliament

The decision to grant Ukraine candidate status for EU membership, which EU leaders will consider in a few weeks, is in Europe’s interests and has the strong support of the European Parliament.

“For some time I spoke about the status of a candidate country for Ukraine and the conclusion of the European Commission, which will be presented to the next European Council. The European Parliament sees this as a choice: do we want Ukraine to look to Europe, or do we allow Ukraine and the rest of the world to question the European Union’s ability to make important decisions about when the EU should play a leading role.”

She expressed her conviction that the European Union has no choice but to bring Ukraine even closer to the EU. The worst signal from the EU would be to show its own hesitations about this when right now Ukraine needs a signal of hope and prospects.

“There should be no doubt about the position of the European Parliament that it sees positively the next step of Ukraine – to become a candidate country for EU membership. This will not only send a strong political message but also pave the way for further integration of Ukraine and Ukrainians, their access to various EU programs and assistance in rebuilding the country. I don’t doubt that these efforts will have the strong support of the European Parliament.”
