The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ukraine noted on March 3, 2023, that Germany handed over nine Biber armored bridge layers, which are based on the chassis of the Leopard 1 tank, to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“Germany provides comprehensive support to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Armored bridge layer Biber [beaver – ed.] is an engineering combat vehicle with the help of which combat units overcome rivers, anti-tank ditches and other obstacles. Nine such vehicles have already been handed over to the Ukrainian military,” reported the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ukraine.
The Biber can deploy and retract a 22-meter bridge consisting of two eleven-meter elements in minutes. Biber is based on the Leopard 1 tank chassis. Instead of a turret, it is equipped with a bridge-laying system.
Unlike many similar engineering machines, the bridge is laid horizontally, leaving the machine’s outline small and invisible. Thanks to modern technology, this machine can be operated by only two crew members.
