German government official not ruling out Russia’s intervention in Ukraine

KYIV, August 1 /Ukrinform /. German Government Coordinator for Intersocietal Cooperation with Russia, Central Asia and the Eastern Partnership Countries Gernot Erler is not excluding the possibility that Russia could resort to a military intervention in the east of Ukraine.
He said this in an interview with the German newspaper Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung .
“If the separatists get closer to their military defeat, no one can rule out the direct intervention of Russia across the border [with Ukraine – Ed.]”, he said.
The German government official said that there are already indications that shelling comes from the Russian territory. Also, new military maneuvers began in the south of Russia. According to him, such reports “worry” and give reason to expect the “worst.”
“If, indeed, the direct intervention is imminent [of the Russian Federation in Ukraine – ed.], it will be a terrible escalation,” the politician said.
According to the diplomat, a political solution to the conflict in Ukraine is possible. The main prerequisite for this, he said, should be a cease-fire, at least temporarily.
