General Staff operational report May 9, 2023 on the Russian invasion of Ukraine

The 440th day of the Russia-Ukraine War: official operational information by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 09.05.2023.

During the day, the Russian army launched 20 missile and 30 aviation strikes, as well as about 30 shelling attacks using rocket artillery systems on the positions of Ukrainian troops and populated areas. Russian military used 17 air-launched cruise missiles to carry out missile strikes, 15 of which were destroyed by Ukrainian military, as well as 3 S-300 missiles targeting Kramatorsk and Kostiantynivka. Civil infrastructure suffered damage.

The probability of missile and aviation strikes throughout the territory of Ukraine remains high. The Russian army continues to concentrate its main efforts on the directions of Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Marinka. During the day, it carried out almost 30 attacks in these areas of the front. The fiercest battles are taking place near the cities of Bakhmut and Marinka.

  • On the Volyn and Polissia directions, there are no signs of Russian formation of offensive groups. Certain units of the Russian Armed Forces continue to stay on the Republic of Belarus’ training grounds.
  • On the Siversk and Slobodzhan regions, the Russian army continues to maintain a military presence in border areas with Ukraine. During the previous day, Russian troops carried out mortar and artillery shelling of Zaliznyi Mist and Muravi in the Chernihiv region, Tovstodubove, Bachivsk, Stari Virky, Iskryskivshchyna, Volfyne, Yunakivka, Mogrytsia, Popivka, and Slavhorod in the Sumy region, as well as Hoptivka, Varvarivka, Bugruvatka, Ohirtseve, Hatysche, Pletenivka, Tykhe, Mala Vovcha, Budarky, Zemlianky, Vilkhuvatka, Dvorychanske, and Khatnie in the Kharkiv region.
  • On the Kupiansk direction, Russian soldiers attempted to improve its tactical position and carried out offensive actions near the settlements of Masiutivka and Stelmakhivka but was unsuccessful. Kamyanka, Kolydiyazne, Krasne Pershe, Fiholivka, Dvorychna, Lyman Pershyi in the Kharkiv region, and Stelmakhivka in the Luhansk region were subjected to artillery and mortar shelling.
  • On the Lyman direction, the Russian army carried out unsuccessful offensive actions in the vicinity of Bilohorivka. Artillery shelling affected Makivka, Bilohorivka, and Vesele in the Luhansk region and Yampolivka and Spirne in the Donetsk region.
  • On the Bakhmut direction, the Russian army continues to conduct an offensive. During the day, it carried out unsuccessful offensive actions in the city of Bakhmut and towards the settlements of Ivanivske and Stupochky. Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Zalizne, and New York in the Donetsk region suffered from Russian shelling.
  • On the Avdiivka direction, Russian military did not carry out any offensive actions but delivered an aviation strike in the area of the settlement of Avdiivka. The Russian army also shelled Avdiivka, Pervomaiske, Netaylove, and Karlivka in the Donetsk region.
  • On the Marinka direction, Ukrainian military repelled numerous Russian attacks in the area of the city of Marinka. At the same time, Georgiivka in the Donetsk region was subjected to Russian shelling.
  • On the Shakhtarsk direction, Russian military did not carry out any offensive actions during the day but shelled the settlements of Novomykhailivka, Vodyane, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, and Velyka Novosilka.
  • On the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions, the Russian army continues to conduct defensive operations. However, it also shelled the settlements of Vremivka and Novopil in the Donetsk region; Olhivske, Malynivka, Huliaypole, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, Orikhiv, Novodanilivka, Kamianske, and Plavni in the Zaporizhzhia region; and Antonivka, Molodizhne, and Zelenivka in the Kherson region.

On May 8, Russian troops started evacuating preschool and school-age children together with their parents, as well as educators and other public sector employees, from the city of Kamyanka-Dniprovska in the Zaporizhzhia region. However, there were few volunteers. The evacuation is being carried out to Berdiansk. At the same time, all medical staff of the local hospital were called to work.

During the day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out 4 strikes on the areas where Russian personnel and military equipment were concentrated, as well as 2 strikes on its air defense missile systems. Missile troops and artillery units hit 2 areas of Russian manpower concentration and a radio-electronic warfare station.
