Ukraine welcomes the conclusions of a special European Council meeting of August 30, which recognized Russian aggression against Ukraine and urged Moscow to withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said this in a statement released on Sunday, the ministry’s press service reported.
“Ukraine welcomes the conclusions of a special European Council meeting of August 30, in which the leaders of the European Union expressed their solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, recognized the fact of aggression on the part of Russia and urged Moscow to withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory. We appreciate the fact that EU leaders accepted the arguments of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in favor of increasing the pressure on Russia to return its position to a constructive direction,” the ministry said.
The ministry said the important results of the EU summit were also unanimous support of the leadership the EU member states for the need for to immediately implement a peace plan by Poroshenko, the requirement to cease the supply of weapons and fighters into Ukraine, and close and establish effective control on the Ukrainian-Russian border.
“We call on the EU and member states to show real solidarity with Ukraine, provide practical support and introduce qualitatively new and deep sanctions against Russia, which would help our country resist Russian aggression,” reads the statement.
