European Parliament backs cancellation of customs duties on Ukrainian exports

The European Parliament has supported the extension by the EU of the autonomous regime of trade preferences for Ukraine for the period from November 1, 2014 to December 31, 2015.
The vote on a respective legislative resolution was held at a plenary session in Strasbourg on Thursday, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.
The rapporteur on this issue was Lithuanian MEP Gabrielius Landsbergis.
Before the vote, well-known French ultranationalist Marine Le Pen and her political supporters tried to block the decision. But her proposal to submit the report for revision to the concerned committee was not supported.
The issue concerns the cancellation of customs duties on Ukrainian exports to the European market before the entry into force of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement in terms of the creation of a deep and comprehensive free trade area.
The decision to postpone the provisional application of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement until January 1, 2016 was approved by the European Commission and the Ukrainian side in September and has already been supported by the Council of the European Union.
