It is noted that the rules will be extended at least until March 2024. This will be done by the decision of the European Commission, a separate decision of the EU countries is not necessary in this case.

The European Commissioner for Home Affairs noted that today’s attacks on Ukrainian cities showed the importance of solidarity with Ukraine.

“We have decided that you [Ukrainians – ed.] do not need to deregister when you go back, you can keep the temporary protection that you have received in a member state. The only thing you need to do is to notify the national or local authorities in your hosting country that you are returning to Ukraine.”

Those seeking protection in the EU does not need to go through long-term asylum proceedings. In addition, Ukrainians have direct rights to social benefits, education, housing and a work permit in the EU.

According to Ylva Johansson, about 4.2 million Ukrainians in the EU are currently under temporary protection.
