Azov regiment announces creation of own party

A new political party to be created on the initiative of the Azov regiment`s heads will appear in Ukraine on October 14, according to Mariupol`s local news portal 0629.

Commander of the Azov regiment Andriy Biletsky says that the party will be based on the principle of a network, 0629 reported.

”Existing parties in Ukraine [often] have fake members. We`ll do it differently. We`ll be seeking leaders in the cities and towns, who will be able to attract activists around themselves and build the network throughout Ukraine,” he said in Mariupol.

The party has no name yet, he said, finding it difficult to elaborate on its ideology. In his words, he wants to unite conscious, active people, volunteers, entrepreneurs around the idea of building a new Ukraine.

”Now it is not the Ukraine we`ve scarified our lives for,” he said.

The Azov, originally being a battalion, was created in the town of Berdiansk on May 5, 2014. On September 17, 2014, Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov expanded the battalion to the regiment with the same name. Biletsky remained commander of the regiment.

On November 11, 2014, Avakov signed an order to incorporate the Azov regiment into the National Guard of Ukraine.
