Obama playing the long game against Putin in Ukraine
December 6 – Russia has finally abandoned the idea of “independence” of eastern regions of Ukraine and is trying to “push” them back under Kyiv’s control. This is reported by Russian “Novaya Gazeta”, citing sources in Putin’s administration, Russian Cabinet of Ministers and among the militants. Russia would like to push “the republics” back to Ukraine on the terms of some sort of autonomy.
December 6 – Price for a barrel of Brent oil fell to a 5-year low in London – to 68.12 dollars, which is 95 cents less than at the beginning of trading.
December 7 – Meeting of the tripartite contact group to resolve the situation in Donbas has been rescheduled for the end of this week.
December 7 – Since the beginning of this year, 14,5 thousand Russian citizens were denied entry into Ukraine by Ukrainian border guards, – said the Chief of the State Border Service of Ukraine Viktor Nazarenko in his interview with Interfax-Ukraine. “As a result of increased control procedures, 14,5 thousand Russian citizens were denied into Ukraine nearly; most of these people intended to participate in destabilizing activities or were unable to confirm the purpose of their trip”, – said Nazarenko.
December 7 – Terrorists from “People’s Republic of Luhansk” have admitted that on December 5th, their units were reinforced by additional military personnel from the city of Tomsk (Russia). Terrorists have specified that these personnel include “intelligence specialists, stormtroopers and those who will cover logistics at the bases.”
December 7 – Defense Minister of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak supports the creation of reserve personnel and equipment in order to be able to deal with armed aggression. According to Poltorak, such reserve is needed to prepared for unexpected enemy action.
December 7 – For occupied Crimea, transition period needed to switch to Russian legislation, will not be extended – Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Kozak.
December 7 – Canada could supply weapons to Ukraine if appropriate decision is made by NATO members – Minister of National Defence of Canada Robert Nicholson.
