The 448th day of the Russia-Ukraine War: official operational information by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 17.05.2023.
During the day, the Russian army conducted 5 missile strikes on the cities of Bakhmut and Kherson using the S-300 air defense systems. Additionally, it carried out 32 airstrikes and over 40 shelling attacks with multiple rocket launch systems on the positions of Ukrainian troops nd civilian settlements. Unfortunately, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population, private residential buildings have been damaged, as well as other civilian and administrative infrastructure.
The likelihood of missile and airstrikes throughout the territory of Ukraine remains high, as the Russian army continues to employ terrorist tactics.
The Russian army continues to concentrate its main efforts on the directions of Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Marinka. During the day, there were 25 combat clashes in the mentioned areas of the front, with Bakhmut and Mariinka remaining the epicenters of the fighting.

- On the Volyn and Polissia directions, there have been no significant changes.
- On the Siversk and Slobozhansk directions, Russian troops conducted mortar and artillery shelling of the settlements of Khotiivka in the Chernihiv Oblast; Novovasylivka, Komarivka, Volfyne in the Sumy Oblast; as well as Huriiv Kozachok, Udy, Okip, Kozacha Lopan, Hatysche, Vovchansk, Budarky, Zybune, Ustynivka, and Zarubynka in the Kharkiv Oblast.
- On the Kupiansk direction, the Russian army continues its attempts to improve its tactical position. During this day, it carried out unsuccessful offensive actions in the areas of Masyutivka and Novoselivske. Russian soldiers conducted an airstrike near Pershotravneve. The settlements of Krasne Pershe, Fiholivka, Novomlynske, Dvorichna, Zapadne, Masyutivka, Tabaivka, Berestove in the Kharkiv Oblast, and Stelmakhivka in the Luhansk Oblast were subjected to artillery and mortar shelling by Russian military.
- On the Lyman direction, the Russian army conducted offensive actions in the area of Nevske in the Luhansk Oblast throughout the day. It carried out airstrikes in the areas of Bilyhorivka, Verkhniokamianske, and Veseloe. The settlements of Makiivka, Nevske, Bilyhorivka in the Luhansk Oblast, and Torske, Dibrova, Verkhniokamianske, and Spirne in the Donetsk Oblast were subjected to artillery shelling.
- On the Bakhmut direction, the Russian army continues its offensive actions. Heavy fighting for Bakhmut is ongoing. Moreover, during the day, it conducted unsuccessful offensive actions towards the settlement of Ivanivske. Russian troops carried out airstrikes in the areas of Bakhmut and Kurdiumivka. The settlements of Vasiukivka, Zaliznianske, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Novomarkove, Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Chasiv Yar, Predtechyne, Bila Hora, Pivnichne, and Shumi in the Donetsk Oblast were affected by Russian shelling.
- On the Avdiivka direction, the Russian army did not conduct any offensive actions during the day. It carried out airstrikes in the areas of the settlements of Novokalynove, Avdiivka, Novoselivka Persha, and Pervomaiske, and conducted shelling of Avdiivka, Pervomaiske, Karlivka, and Nevelske in the Donetsk Oblast.
- On the Mariinka direction, Ukrainian troops repelled numerous Russian attacks in the area of the city of Marinka. At the same time, the Russian army conducted an airstrike on Krasnohorivka and shelled the settlements of Marinka, Paraskeviivka, and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk Oblast.
- On the Shakhtarsk direction, Russian military did not conduct any offensive actions during the day. Russian troops carried out an airstrike in the area of Velyka Novosilka and shelled, among others, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, and Novoukrainka.
- On the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions, the Russian army continues defensive actions. It carried out an airstrike on the settlement of Novopil in the Donetsk Oblast and Mala Tokmachka in Zaporizhzhia. Additionally, Russian troops conducted shelling of over 20 settlements, including Vremivka, Novosilka, Zelene Pole, Novopil in the Donetsk Oblast; Olhivske, Huliaypole, Zaliznychnoe, Mala Tokmachka, Shcherbaky, Stepove, and Kamianske in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast; Zolota Balka, Kachkarivka, Chervonyi Mayak, Zmiivka, Berislav, Tiahinka, Antonivka, Dniprovskoe, Kizomys, Shyroka Balka in the Kherson Oblast, and the city of Kherson.
During the day, the Defense Forces’ aviation carried out 14 strikes on Russian personnel and military equipment concentration areas, including 5 strikes on air defense missile systems. Additionally, during this period, Ukrainian troops destroyed 2 reconnaissance UAVs of the “Orlan-10” type.
The missile troops and artillery units targeted 1 command post, 6 troops concentration areas, 2 ammunition depots, 2 fuel and lubricant depots, 1 artillery unit in firing position, 2 air defense systems, and 2 other important Russian targets.
