The bipartisan draft law was adopted by 68 votes in favor, and 29 against.
The total volume of expenditures provided for in this budget will be higher than last year. In 2022, this indicator was set at the level of $1.52 trillion. Most of the funds — $858 billion — will go to defense, which is 45 billion more than President Biden requested. $722.5 billion was allocated for non-defense spending — almost 6% more than last year’s $730 billion.
Washington allocated $44.9 billion for emergency support to Ukraine and NATO allies. This year, $13.6 billion was allocated to support Ukraine.
“The law provides for 19.8 billion dollars for armaments and equipment of Ukrainian troops, as well as NATO allies. Another 12.9 billion dollars have been allocated to stabilize the Ukrainian economy and compensate for losses,” clarified the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.
More than $300 million is allocated to counteract Russia’s influence, including support for energy independence and economic stability of countries under pressure from the Russian Federation.
An amendment was also included in the draft budget, which allows the seizure of assets of Russian businessmen frozen due to sanctions, and their transfer to Ukraine.
