Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the alleged “independence” of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions of Ukraine on September 29, 2022. Previously, pseudo-referendums were held on these territories regarding the “accession” to Russia.

Putin was trying to justify his attempt to annex the Ukrainian territory with the provisions of the UN Charter and norms of international law, which the Russian Federation has repeatedly grossly violated, in particular, with the occupation of Crimea in 2014.
“I decide to recognize the state sovereignty and independence of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions,” the decrees state.
It should be noted that this time the Russian Federation did not even try to hide the illegality of the organized “referendums” on Ukrainian territories, unlike in 2014.
The so-called “treaty signing” ceremony on the “accession to Russia” of the occupied territories of Ukraine is to take place in the Kremlin today on September 30, 2022.
