Adviser to the mayor of Mariupol said on August 16, 2022, that it is currently impossible to say how many Ukrainians Russia killed in occupied Mariupol (east of Ukraine). But in terms of the number of victims, the Ukrainian city exceeded Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in which about 50,000 people died.

He emphasized that, according to official data, about 22,000 people were buried in mass graves alone. It will be possible to count all the dead only after the deoccupation of Mariupol.
“Today, 20,000-22,000 Mariupol residents are buried in mass graves around Mariupol during the hostilities. We cannot even say how many more have actually died. No one knows this. I think we will be able to count only after the deoccupation. I will be careful to say that Mariupol definitely exceeded the number of victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That is, Mariupol alone without nuclear bombs took a step forward. Hiroshima and Nagasaki had more than 50,000 victims, I think Mariupol had more victims,” Andryushchenko said.
However, even the number of buried Mariupol residents may be much higher. The additional data cast doubt on the recognized figures.
“We thought that a plate with a number was the identification number of a person’s burial. That is, one plate is one buried person. And now we know for sure, that this is not the identification number of the burial, but the identification number of the report of the inspection by the so-called “prosecutor’s office of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic”. That is, there may be one or ten people in that report. This suggests that there are even more buried than we think.”
